West Nile virus is carried by infected birds that migrate throughout the country
(See How do horses get West Nile virus?). Infected mosquitoes transmit the
virus to other birds and mammals, including humans and horses. There are
no physical barriers to the spread of West Nile virus in the U.S. The virus is
now a threat to horses coast-to-coast.
